COMING BACK HOME IS NOT PEACE

6 min read Jul 3, 2026 Romance

The gate made that slow metallic sound like it was also tired of opening for people.

Kamsi sat at the back seat of the car, face leaned slightly against the window. Lagos heat was still there even though the sun was already dropping. That kind of heat that sticks to your skin and follows you inside like debt.

“Madam, we don reach,” the driver said, turning the ignition off.

For a moment, she didn’t move.

Same house. Same cream-colored fence. Same overgrown hibiscus at the corner her father kept threatening to cut every December and never did.

But it didn’t feel like home.

It felt like somewhere she was returning to hide.

She stepped down slowly, heels touching the ground like she was testing if the ground still knew her. The gate man rushed forward immediately.

“Welcome ma, welcome,” he said, already dragging her small suitcase like it was his life assignment.

The front door opened before she even got there.

Her mother stood there.

Not smiling fully.

Just that tight kind of face mothers wear when they are happy but also calculating something at the same time.

“Kamsi,” her mother said softly.

“Mom,” she replied, voice low.

No hug lasted more than three seconds. Nigerian mothers don’t waste time with emotional grammar when something is still hanging in the air.

Inside, the house smelled the same. Detergent. Fried something from earlier. A faint scent of incense from morning prayers.

But everything felt rearranged emotionally.

Like even the walls were aware she came back defeated.

“You lost weight,” her mother said, eye scanning her like a doctor.

“I’m fine.”

“You always say that.”

Kamsi dropped her bag on the sofa. Her phone buzzed. She didn’t check it.

She already knew who it was not.

That alone hurt more than anything.

A chair scraped somewhere in the passage.

Footsteps followed.

Slow. Controlled. Not rushed like someone trying to impress anybody.

A young man appeared from the hallway.

White shirt slightly rolled up. Dark trousers. Clean appearance like someone who takes pride in looking invisible but still presentable.

He stopped immediately when he saw her.

Just a second pause.

Then he lowered his head slightly.

“Good evening ma,” he said.

His voice was calm. Not too soft. Not too loud. Like someone who chooses every word before speaking it.

Kamsi looked at him.

Then looked at her mother.

“Who is this?” she asked.

Her mother adjusted her wrapper a bit like she was preparing for a small explanation that had bigger weight behind it.

“Oh. Him? He just started yesterday. House help. Dami.”

The name landed inside the room quietly.

Dami didn’t look at her again. He just stood there waiting for instruction like he was trained not to occupy space unnecessarily.

But Kamsi noticed something small.

He wasn’t nervous.

Not even a little.

Most new help would be adjusting their posture, checking corners, pretending not to breathe too loud.

But this one stood like someone who had already been inside the house before today.

“Show her the guest room,” her mother said.

“Yes ma,” Dami replied immediately.

He turned and started walking.

Kamsi followed behind him.

The corridor light flickered once as she passed.

Small thing.

But she noticed it.

The house was quiet in a way that didn’t feel normal. Even the TV in the sitting room was off, which was rare in this house.

As they walked, Kamsi’s eyes moved without permission.

He moved like someone who already knew where things were.

He didn’t hesitate at corners.

He didn’t glance at doors like a stranger would.

At one point, he stopped in front of the guest room without being told.

Then opened it.

“You will stay here,” he said.

Kamsi paused.

“How you know this is the guest room?” she asked.

Dami turned slightly.

For the first time, he looked at her properly.

Not long.

Just enough.

“I was shown earlier,” he replied.

Then he stepped aside for her to enter.

The room was untouched. Clean sheets. Curtain slightly open. That soft evening light spilling inside.

She dropped her bag on the bed.

“Thank you,” she said, not sure why she even said it.

Dami nodded once.

He was about to leave.

Then Kamsi’s phone rang again.

This time, she checked.

The name on the screen made her jaw tighten.

She rejected the call.

Dami had already reached the door, but she caught something.

He paused.

Just a little.

Like he saw the name.

Like he understood it.

But he didn’t ask anything.

Instead, he said something unexpected.

“You should block people that stress you,” he said casually.

Kamsi looked up sharply.

“Excuse me?”

Dami adjusted his sleeve slightly.

“I just mean… peace is important.”

Silence stretched between them.

Too long for strangers.

Then Kamsi laughed lightly, but it wasn’t a happy laugh.

“You talk like you know my life,” she said.

Dami’s face didn’t change.

“I don’t,” he replied.

But the way he said it sounded like a lie that was carefully protected.

He left the room.

The door clicked shut.

Kamsi sat on the bed slowly.

Her phone rang again.

Same name.

She stared at it this time.

Then tossed it aside like it was burning her hand.

Outside the room, footsteps moved faintly down the corridor.

Then stopped.

Not far.

Just outside her door.

Standing.

Waiting.

Like someone who had no reason to rush.

Kamsi looked toward the door.

Still closed.

But somehow… it felt like someone was already on the other side watching the same silence she was sitting inside.

And she didn’t even know why that thought made her chest tighten.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Curiosity.

The phone rang again on the bed.

She didn’t pick it.

The footsteps outside didn’t move.

And in that moment, the house suddenly felt smaller than it used to be.

Like something inside it had just changed without asking anybody for permission.

To be continued…
