Deaconess Patience Is Watching

3 min read Jul 6, 2026 Church Drama

Patience Nwafor had married once, briefly, disastrously, to a man who left her for a woman half her age and twice her patience, and she had rebuilt her entire life around one principle since: nothing good comes to a woman who waits quietly for someone to notice her.

She had not waited quietly. She had made herself indispensable, church finance secretary for six years, running Grace Sanctuary’s books tighter than the government ran anything, positioning herself close enough to Pastor Emmanuel that half the mothers’ union already assumed, correctly, where her ambitions lay.

She was not a foolish woman. She knew Emmanuel’s grief for Rita was real, not performance, and she had genuinely, patiently waited two years for it to soften into something she could quietly step into. What she had not planned for was a twenty-six-year-old choir mistress with an unremarkable face and an inconvenient habit of making the pastor smile like he meant it.

“You saw it too,” she said to Pastor Michael Chukwuma over lunch that Tuesday, in the small office behind the sanctuary where church business often turned into something closer to strategy.

Michael, thirty-four and perpetually convinced Grace Sanctuary would be run better under his hand than Emmanuel’s, didn’t look up from his plate immediately.

“Saw what.”

“How he looked at that girl in the loft. Comfortable. Warm.” Patience’s mouth flattened. “Two years I have been patient, Michael. Two years of Sunday dinners at his house, of handling his finances like a wife would, of protecting his image every time some woman in this church tries her luck, and now suddenly it’s Tolu Adewale, of all people.”

“Why do you care so much who the man marries?” Michael asked, though his tone suggested he already suspected the honest answer and found it more useful than surprising.

“Because whoever becomes First Lady of Grace Sanctuary determines who has real influence in this church for the next twenty years,” Patience said. “And because, unlike some people—” she gave him a pointed look “—I actually plan ahead instead of waiting for opportunity to fall from heaven.”

Michael set down his fork. “What are you proposing?”

“Nothing dramatic. Yet.” Patience’s smile was thin. “I’m simply going to start helping in the choir office. Organizing files. Being useful. A woman notices things, Michael, when she’s close enough to notice them.”

She did not mention, because she hadn’t yet decided if it mattered, that Tolu Adewale’s bag sometimes sat unattended in that same choir office during rehearsal breaks, or that women who wrote things down in private diaries usually did so because they had something they were afraid to say out loud.

That Wednesday, Patience volunteered to reorganize the choir ministry’s supply cupboard. Nobody thought it was strange. Patience volunteering for administrative tasks was, after all, simply who she had always been.
