The Betrayal I Didn’t See Coming
“Kemi.”
Amara said the name again, like maybe it would sound different the second time.
Like maybe it would stop hurting.
But it didn’t.
Tobi watched her carefully. “You’re sure?”
Amara let out a short, broken laugh.
“Sure? That’s my best friend.”
Her voice shook slightly.
“We literally spoke this morning.”
Her chest tightened.
“She’s the one that sent me the screenshot.”
Silence.
That detail hung in the air like something heavy.
Tobi frowned.
“Wait. She sent you the engagement post?”
Amara nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
His expression changed.
Not shock.
Something else.
Something deeper.
“Then she knows,” he said quietly.
Amara blinked.
“Knows what?”
Tobi hesitated again.
And this time, it annoyed her more than it scared her.
“Stop doing that,” she snapped. “Stop talking like you know one secret I don’t know. Just say it!”
People passing by were starting to notice them now, but she didn’t care.
Her heart was already racing too fast.
Tobi sighed.
“Okay,” he said. “Let’s think about this together.”
“I don’t want to think. I want answers.”
“You’ll get them. Just calm down small.”
“I am calm!”
“You’re not.”
“Okay fine, I’m not calm!” she burst. “Now talk!”
Tobi looked at her for a second, then nodded.
“Alright. Let’s break it down.”
Amara folded her arms tightly, trying to hold herself together.
“You and Femi broke up six months ago,” he began.
“Yes.”
“Bad breakup.”
“Very bad.”
“He cheated?”
Amara’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“With different girls?”
She nodded again, slower this time.
Tobi continued.
“And since then, no contact?”
“None.”
“And now suddenly, he’s engaged.”
“Yes!”
“And the girl he’s engaged to is your best friend.”
Amara swallowed.
“Yes…”
Tobi took a deep breath.
“Don’t you find that timeline somehow… off?”
Amara frowned.
“I don’t understand.”
He looked at her directly.
“I think something has been going on between them longer than you realize.”
The words hit her like a slap.
“No.”
It came out instantly.
Sharp.
Defensive.
“No, that’s not possible.”
Tobi didn’t argue.
He just watched her.
“They just got engaged,” Amara continued quickly. “Maybe they started dating after me. Maybe it just happened fast.”
“Kemi didn’t tell you she was dating anyone?”
Amara paused.
Her mind went back.
Weeks.
Months.
Conversations.
“No…” she said slowly. “But that doesn’t mean anything. She’s private sometimes.”
Tobi nodded.
“True.”
That made her feel slightly better.
But only for a second.
“Wait,” she said suddenly.
Something clicked.
Her stomach dropped again.
“There was one time…” she whispered.
Tobi leaned in slightly. “What time?”
Amara’s eyes lost focus as she replayed the memory.
“About… three months ago,” she said. “She cancelled on me last minute. Said she had an emergency.”
“And?”
“I later saw her on someone’s Instagram story. She was at a lounge.”
Tobi didn’t interrupt.
“She told me it was her cousin’s birthday,” Amara continued. “I didn’t think too much about it.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“But now…”
Tobi’s voice was soft. “Now it’s looking different.”
Amara shook her head.
“No. No, no, no. Kemi wouldn’t do that to me.”
But even as she said it…
Her voice wasn’t convincing.
“She stayed with me when I was crying over him,” Amara said, her eyes starting to water. “She insulted him. She said I deserved better.”
Her lips trembled.
“She can’t be the same person that…”
She couldn’t finish the sentence.
Tobi stepped closer.
“Amara.”
She looked up at him.
“Sometimes,” he said carefully, “people play roles.”
Her heart sank deeper.
“She might have been your friend,” he continued. “But she might also have been hiding something.”
Amara’s eyes filled with tears.
“But why?” she whispered. “Why would she do that to me?”
Tobi didn’t answer immediately.
Because there was no easy answer.
And they both knew it.
Her phone buzzed again.
This time, she looked at it.
Kemi.
Calling.
Amara froze.
Her chest tightened so hard it almost hurt.
“She’s calling,” she said, her voice barely there.
Tobi glanced at the phone.
“Pick it.”
Amara shook her head immediately.
“I can’t.”
“You have to.”
“What will I even say?”
“The truth.”
Amara laughed weakly.
“I don’t even know the truth.”
The phone kept ringing.
And ringing.
And ringing.
Finally, it stopped.
A message came in immediately.
Kemi:
Babe where are you? I’ve been calling you.
Another message.
We need to talk.
Amara stared at the screen.
Her hands were shaking now.
“She said we need to talk,” she whispered.
Tobi nodded slowly.
“Good.”
“Good?” Amara snapped. “What part of this is good?”
“This is your chance to hear her side.”
Amara looked at him like he was crazy.
“My best friend is engaged to my ex and you’re saying it’s good?”
“I’m saying you need clarity.”
“I don’t want clarity. I want peace!”
“You won’t have peace without truth.”
That line hit her hard.
Because deep down…
She knew he was right.
Amara closed her eyes for a second.
Then opened them.
Decision made.
“I’ll meet her,” she said.
Tobi nodded.
“Where?”
Amara checked her phone again.
Another message had come in.
Kemi:
Please come to that small café near your office. I’m there already.
Amara’s heart started pounding again.
“She’s already waiting,” she said.
Tobi glanced at the road, then back at her.
“Okay.”
“Okay what?”
“I’m coming with you.”
Amara blinked.
“What?”
“I’m not leaving you alone for this.”
She shook her head.
“No. This is between me and her.”
Tobi’s jaw tightened slightly.
“I understand. But trust me, you might need someone there.”
“I don’t even know you,” she said.
“True.”
“Exactly. So you’re not coming.”
He looked like he wanted to argue.
But then he stopped.
“Fine,” he said quietly. “I won’t sit with you.”
Amara narrowed her eyes.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I’ll be close enough if anything goes wrong.”
Her heart skipped slightly.
That was… oddly comforting.
But also strange.
“You’re doing too much,” she said.
“Maybe,” he replied. “But I have my reasons.”
That again.
His reasons.
His secrets.
Amara didn’t have the energy to dig into that now.
Not when her whole world was already shaking.
“Do whatever you want,” she muttered.
Then she turned.
And started walking toward the café.
Each step felt heavier than the last.
Her mind was racing.
Her chest tight.
Her emotions everywhere at once.
Because in a few minutes…
She was about to sit across from her best friend.
And find out if everything she believed in…
Was a complete lie.
Behind her, Tobi watched her go.
His expression serious.
Focused.
Like someone who already knew how this was going to end.
And somehow…
That was the scariest part.
To be continued…
