The Child They Never Named Right
The machines in the room were screaming.
Doctors shouting instructions.
Nurses rushing in.
But Teniola didn’t hear any of it clearly.
Everything felt far away, like she was underwater watching people move above her.
Kola held her from behind.
“Teni, breathe…”
But she wasn’t breathing properly.
Her father’s words were still inside her head.
“You were the adopted child.”
She shook her head slowly.
“No… no… that’s not true.”
But her voice didn’t carry weight anymore.
It sounded like someone trying to argue with a truth already decided.
Inside the room, doctors were fighting to stabilize Pastor Gideon.
“BP dropping!”
“Clear airway!”
“Sir, stay with us!”
But his eyes were already drifting.
And still… he kept looking at her.
Like he needed her to hear something before everything went dark.
Outside the room, Morenike and Teniola’s mother stood frozen.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody cried anymore.
It was like the shock had taken away even tears.
Kola finally broke the silence.
“What did he mean?”
Teniola didn’t answer.
Her lips were shaking.
Her mind was somewhere else entirely.
Then suddenly…
She turned and walked out of the hospital corridor.
Fast.
Almost running.
“Teni!” Kola called after her.
But she didn’t stop.
She got outside the hospital building and kept walking until her legs gave up.
She sat on a cold concrete bench near the parking area.
Head down.
Hands shaking.
Everything inside her was collapsing in layers.
Her identity.
Her childhood.
Her memories.
Even the way she understood love.
Kola finally reached her and sat beside her quietly.
For a long time, neither of them spoke.
Then she whispered,
“So everything I lived… was not even mine?”
Kola looked at her.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.”
Teniola laughed once.
A broken sound.
“My name… my birthday… my family…”
She looked up slowly.
“Even my own story.”
Silence.
Then she turned to him.
“What about you?”
Kola frowned.
“What do you mean?”
She wiped her face.
“You said you loved me for three years.”
“Yes.”
She nodded slowly.
“Then tell me… did you love me because of me…”
“…or because of who you thought I was?”
That question hit differently.
Kola didn’t answer immediately.
And that silence said too much.
Back inside the hospital…
Pastor Gideon’s condition stabilised slightly.
But he was unconscious.
Machines now doing what his body could no longer do alone.
The doctor stepped out.
“He’s stable for now… but very weak.”
Teniola’s mother held her chest.
“Can we see him?”
“One at a time.”
Morenike looked at Teniola.
“You should go first.”
Teniola didn’t move immediately.
Then slowly…
She stood up and walked back inside.
The room was dim now.
Quiet.
Only the soft beeping of machines.
Her father lay there, eyes closed.
But breathing.
Barely.
Teniola sat beside him.
And for the first time…
She didn’t see a pastor.
She didn’t see a father.
She just saw a man.
A tired man carrying secrets too heavy for one lifetime.
She whispered,
“Why me?”
No answer.
She leaned closer.
“Why did you say I was adopted?”
Still nothing.
Her voice cracked.
“Daddy… please.”
A weak movement.
His fingers twitched.
He was awake.
Barely.
His lips moved slowly.
“Teni…”
She held his hand immediately.
“I’m here.”
His eyes opened slightly.
Tired.
But focused on her.
“I didn’t tell you everything.”
She shook her head.
“Just talk to me.”
He took a shaky breath.
“Your mother… doesn’t know the full truth.”
Teniola frowned.
“What truth?”
His voice dropped.
Barely audible.
“The day Daniel disappeared…”
Her heart tightened.
“…he didn’t just go missing.”
She leaned closer.
“What happened?”
A pause.
Then he whispered,
“He was taken.”
Teniola froze.
“By who?”
His eyes filled with tears again.
“I don’t know.”
Silence.
Then he added something worse.
“But the person who took him… left something behind.”
Teniola frowned.
“What?”
Her father’s hand tightened slightly in hers.
“A child.”
She blinked.
“What are you saying?”
His voice shook.
“You were brought to me that same week.”
Teniola’s breathing changed.
“I don’t understand.”
He looked at her directly.
“They said you were abandoned.”
Her chest rose and fell faster.
“Who said?”
He hesitated.
Then said quietly,
“The church.”
Silence dropped like a stone.
Outside the room…
Kola and Morenike were now standing together.
Morenike looked disturbed.
“This story is getting darker than I thought.”
Kola nodded slowly.
“It’s not even complete yet.”
She turned to him.
“What are you not saying?”
Kola looked away.
“I don’t trust that church.”
Morenike frowned.
“Why?”
He swallowed.
“Because I saw Musa there before the accident.”
Her eyes widened.
“You what?”
Kola nodded.
“Not once.”
“Multiple times.”
Morenike stepped back slightly.
“So you think…”
Kola cut in.
“I think this started long before the crash.”
Inside the room…
Teniola’s father coughed again.
“Teni…”
She held his hand tighter.
“Don’t leave me yet.”
His eyes softened.
“I need you to go there.”
She frowned.
“Where?”
He struggled to speak.
“The church.”
Her heart dropped.
“Why?”
His voice barely came out.
“Because… the truth is still buried there.”
Teniola shook her head.
“I don’t want more truth.”
But he squeezed her hand.
“You don’t get to choose anymore.”
A long pause.
Then his final whisper before drifting again into unconsciousness.
“Your real name… is still there.”
Teniola froze.
“What?”
But his eyes closed.
No more response.
Just machines.
Just beeping.
Just silence.
She stepped out of the room slowly.
Kola saw her face immediately.
“What did he say?”
Teniola looked at him.
Her voice was low.
Different.
Changed.
“He said my real name is still in the church.”
Morenike frowned.
“What does that even mean?”
Teniola looked straight ahead.
“I don’t know.”
A pause.
Then she added something that made both of them go quiet.
“But I think my entire life… was designed inside that place.”
And for the first time since everything started…
Kola looked truly unsettled.
Because deep down…
He already knew what that meant.
And he didn’t like the direction this truth was heading.
Not at all.
To be continued…
