The First Touch

4 min read Jul 13, 2026 Marriage & Relationship Drama

The following morning, I woke up feeling restless. My dream from the night before still lingered in my mind, making me avoid looking at myself in the mirror for too long. I chose a simple but elegant house dress and went downstairs, determined to keep some distance from Kene.

Raymond was still in Abuja. He sent a short message saying he would return the next day. Part of me felt relieved, another part felt guilty for that relief.

Kene was already in the living room, reading a newspaper. When I entered, he looked up and gave me that gentle smile that was beginning to unsettle me.

“Good morning, Naza. You look lovely as always.”

“Thank you,” I replied, trying to sound normal. “Would you like breakfast?”

We ate together again, but this time the silence between us carried more weight. Every glance felt loaded. After breakfast, he suggested we sit by the poolside to enjoy the morning sun. I agreed, telling myself it was harmless.

We sat on the comfortable lounge chairs, talking about light topics at first. But soon, the conversation turned personal again. Kene asked about my life before marriage, about my dreams, and why I seemed to carry a quiet sadness in my eyes. His questions were gentle but probing, as if he could see through the perfect wife image I tried to maintain.

As we spoke, a light breeze caused my dress to shift slightly. Kene’s eyes followed the movement for a moment before he looked away respectfully. Still, I felt the warmth of his attention on my skin.

Later, when I stood up to get a drink, I accidentally knocked over a small vase on the table. It fell and shattered. As I bent down to pick up the pieces, Kene quickly joined me.

“Careful,” he said, his hand covering mine to stop me from touching the sharp edges.

That single touch — his warm palm over the back of my hand — sent a wave of electricity through my entire body. We both froze. For several seconds, neither of us moved. His fingers slowly traced the lines of my hand, gentle and deliberate. My breath caught in my throat. I looked up and found him staring at me with an intensity that made my knees feel weak.

“Naza…” he whispered, his voice low and full of something I had never heard from my husband.

I pulled my hand away slowly, my heart racing. “Thank you. I can manage.”

But the moment had already changed something between us. We returned to our seats, but the air now felt heavier, sweeter, and far more dangerous. We continued talking, yet every word carried an unspoken meaning. Every smile felt like a secret.

By evening, the tension had grown so strong it was almost unbearable. After dinner, we found ourselves back on the balcony again. This had become our unspoken meeting place. The city lights twinkled below us as we stood side by side.

“You know,” Kene said softly, “I have been trying to fight this feeling since the day I arrived. But being around you… it’s becoming difficult.”

I didn’t know how to respond. My heart was beating so fast I feared he could hear it. I wanted to step closer. I wanted to feel the warmth of his presence. But I also knew how wrong it was.

“I am a married woman, Kene,” I said quietly, almost to remind myself.

He nodded, but his eyes never left mine. “I know. And he is my brother.”

We stood there in silence for a long time. Then, slowly, he lifted his hand and gently brushed a strand of hair away from my face. His fingers lingered on my cheek, warm and tender. The touch was light, but it felt more intimate than anything I had experienced in my marriage.

My eyes closed for a brief moment. When I opened them, his face was much closer. Our lips were only inches apart. The pull between us was magnetic. I could feel his breath mingling with mine.

Just as I felt myself leaning in, the sound of the gate opening broke the moment. Raymond’s car was entering the compound earlier than expected.

We stepped away from each other quickly. My legs felt unsteady as I hurried inside to welcome my husband. Kene remained on the balcony, watching me go.

That night, as Raymond slept beside me, I lay awake, my cheek still tingling from Kene’s touch. One innocent brush of fingers had awakened something deep inside me — something I knew would be hard to put back to sleep.
