The Interview That Changed Everything

5 min read Jul 13, 2026 Romance

If you’ve ever searched for a job in Lagos with just talent and plenty of hope, you’ll understand why Zainab almost didn’t attend the interview.

That morning, she stood in front of the cracked mirror in the one-bedroom apartment she shared with her younger brother in Surulere, adjusting the collar of the only blazer she owned. The sleeves were slightly faded, but she’d ironed them so well that from a distance, nobody would notice.

Her brother, Tobi, looked up from the dining table that doubled as his study desk.

“Sis, are you sure this is the company?”

Zai looked at the invitation on her phone again.

LuxeThread Fashion House. Interview. 10:00 a.m.

“I’ve checked it like twenty times,” she said, forcing a smile. “It’s real.”

“You know people have been scamming job seekers these days.”

She laughed.

“If it’s a scam, at least let me go and confirm with my own eyes.”

Mama Zainab walked out from the tiny kitchen carrying two slices of bread and a cup of tea.

“You cannot go on an empty stomach.”

“Mummy, I’ll eat when I come back.”

“You said that yesterday too.”

Zai sighed and took the bread.

Life had been like that for months. Every naira mattered. She’d spent years designing clothes from her tiny corner in Yaba, sewing outfits for influencers who never tagged her, brides who never referred her, and boutique owners who delayed payment as if it were a favor.

Still, she refused to give up.

Fashion wasn’t just what she did.

It was who she was.

Thirty-five minutes later, she stepped out of a danfo at Victoria Island and stopped in front of the LuxeThread headquarters.

Her mouth fell open.

The building looked less like an office and more like something she’d only seen on Instagram. Floor-to-ceiling glass. Perfect landscaping. Luxury cars parked outside as if money itself worked there.

She looked down at her black heels.

One of them had a tiny crack.

“God, abeg, just let it survive today,” she whispered.

Inside, everything smelled expensive.

The reception area was filled with stylish men and women dressed like they had walked straight off a runway.

For the first time that morning, doubt crept in.

Maybe they made a mistake inviting her.

A receptionist smiled politely.

“Good morning. Name, please?”

“Zainab Adebayo.”

The receptionist checked her tablet.

“You’re expected. Please have a seat.”

Expected.

That single word calmed her racing heart.

About twenty candidates waited in silence. Some were flipping through portfolios. Others whispered confidently about international fashion schools and luxury brands they’d worked with.

Zai quietly looked at her own portfolio.

It wasn’t glamorous.

Just years of hard work stitched into paper.

An hour later, a woman in a navy suit stepped into the waiting area.

“Zainab Adebayo?”

She stood immediately.

“This way.”

The interview room was surprisingly simple.

Three executives sat across the table.

The first few questions were exactly what she’d expected.

“Tell us about yourself.”

“What inspires your designs?”

“Where do you see yourself in five years?”

She answered honestly.

No rehearsed speeches.

No fake confidence.

Just truth.

Then one of the executives slid a sketchbook across the table.

“You have fifteen minutes.”

“To do what?”

“Design an evening dress for a woman attending an international fashion awards ceremony.”

No internet.

No references.

Just imagination.

Zai took a slow breath.

The pencil touched the paper.

Everything around her disappeared.

She forgot the executives.

Forgot the pressure.

Forgot the fear.

She only saw fabric.

Movement.

Elegance.

By the time she finished, she gently pushed the sketchbook back across the table.

None of the interviewers spoke immediately.

One picked it up.

Another leaned closer.

The woman in the navy suit smiled without realizing it.

Finally, the oldest man nodded.

“Thank you, Miss Adebayo.”

That was it.

No compliments.

No criticism.

Nothing.

Outside the building, disappointment settled over her.

“I’ve failed,” she muttered.

If they’d liked her work, surely they would have said something.

She began walking toward the bus stop when her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

“Hello?”

“Good afternoon. Is this Miss Zainab Adebayo?”

“Yes.”

“This is LuxeThread.”

Her heart skipped.

“We would like you to return to the office.”

She frowned.

“Did I leave something behind?”

“No.”

A brief pause.

“Our CEO would like to meet you personally.”

Her grip tightened around the phone.

“The CEO?”

“Yes.”

“I… I’ll be there.”

Twenty minutes later, she was back in the same building, more nervous than before.

This time, the receptionist didn’t send her to the interview room.

She directed her to the executive floor.

The elevator doors opened onto a quiet corridor with polished wooden panels and framed photographs of LuxeThread’s biggest collections.

At the end of the hallway stood a large office with its door slightly open.

She knocked softly.

A calm voice replied.

“Come in.”

Zai stepped inside.

A man stood by the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking Victoria Island.

Tall.

Well-tailored charcoal suit.

Calm confidence.

Without turning around, he spoke.

“I’ve seen hundreds of portfolios over the years.”

He slowly faced her.

“But yours reminded me why I started this company.”

His eyes rested on her sketchbook.

Then they met hers.

For a moment, the room felt impossibly still.

He smiled.

“I’m Raymond Okonkwo.”

He extended his hand.

“Welcome to LuxeThread.”

As Zai reached out to shake his hand, Raymond held her gaze a fraction longer than necessary.

Neither of them noticed the office door wasn’t fully closed.

Outside, someone paused, glanced through the narrow opening, and quietly walked away after watching the handshake.

Engagement Question

If you were Zai, would you see Raymond’s personal interest as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, or would it immediately raise a red flag?

To be continued…
