The Lie That Haunted a Family

“What lie?”

Damilola’s voice cracked.

His eyes darted between Chief Adebisi and his mother.

“Somebody needs to explain this now.”

Mama Bose buried her face in her hands.

“I’ll do it.”

Chief Adebisi gently shook his head.

“No.”

“You’ve carried this alone for too long.”

“This part… let me say it.”

He pulled a chair closer and sat down slowly.

For a few moments, nobody spoke.

The only sound in the room was the ticking wall clock.

Twenty-eight years of silence was about to end.

“It happened when you were six years old,” Chief Adebisi began.

“You fell from the mango tree in your grandmother’s compound.”

Damilola remembered.

Barely.

He remembered the pain.

The ambulance.

The hospital smell.

“You lost a lot of blood.”

“The doctors asked your father to donate immediately.”

He paused.

“But his blood couldn’t save you.”

“Why?”

“The blood groups didn’t match.”

Damilola frowned.

“Blood groups don’t always match.”

“Exactly.”

“So what’s the problem?”

“The problem started after one of the doctors became suspicious.”

“He recommended a routine compatibility test.”

“Just to be sure.”

Fiyin held her breath.

Chief Adebisi continued.

“The results showed something impossible.”

Damilola’s heart pounded.

“What?”

“The doctor concluded that your father could not be your biological father.”

Silence.

The words hung in the room like smoke.

Damilola laughed.

A dry, nervous laugh.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“I know.”

“My father raised me.”

“Yes.”

“He loved me.”

“Yes.”

“So the test was wrong.”

Chief Adebisi lowered his eyes.

“Your father prayed it was.”

Mama Bose began crying again.

“It was wrong.”

She looked up desperately.

“It had to be wrong.”

Chief Adebisi looked at her with pity.

“It wasn’t.”

“No…”

“It wasn’t.”

Damilola stepped backward.

His legs suddenly felt weak.

“So…”

He looked at his mother.

“What is he saying?”

Mama Bose slowly shook her head.

“I never betrayed your father.”

“I swear before God.”

“I never did.”

“Then how?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I’ve asked myself the same question every day for twenty-eight years.”

Chief Adebisi spoke quietly.

“The hospital repeated the test.”

“And then another laboratory repeated it.”

“The results never changed.”

Damilola couldn’t breathe properly.

Everything he believed about his family was collapsing.

“So…”

“My father knew?”

Chief Adebisi nodded.

“Yes.”

“And he still stayed?”

“Yes.”

“He never confronted you?”

Mama Bose’s voice was barely audible.

“He did.”

Flashback.

The hospital room smelled of disinfectant.

Mama Bose sat on the bed, still recovering from the shock.

Her husband stood by the window.

Silent.

Holding the test report.

After several minutes, he finally spoke.

“I have only one question.”

She looked at him with swollen eyes.

“I didn’t cheat.”

He turned around.

“Then explain this.”

“I can’t.”

He searched her face.

For any sign of guilt.

Any lie.

He found none.

Finally…

He folded the report.

Dropped it into his pocket.

And said the words that would define the rest of his life.

“I don’t understand this.”

“But I know my wife.”

“And I know my son.”

“I’m tearing this report up.”

“And we’re never speaking about it again.”

He ripped the paper into tiny pieces.

Then hugged his wife.

She cried in his arms for nearly an hour.

Neither of them ever mentioned the report again.

Back in the present…

Damilola’s tears finally came.

“My father…”

“He believed you?”

“With everything.”

“He chose us.”

Mama Bose nodded.

“He said blood could never replace love.”

Fiyin quietly wiped her own tears.

For the first time, she truly understood why Mama Bose loved Damilola with such desperation.

He wasn’t just her son.

He was the son a good man had chosen every single day.

Despite the doubt.

Despite the pain.

Despite the unanswered questions.

Chief Adebisi reached into his bag once more.

“This is the last thing.”

He placed a sealed brown envelope on the table.

“It’s from the hospital.”

“I kept it because your father asked me to.”

Mama Bose looked horrified.

“No…”

“Dami doesn’t need it.”

“He deserves the truth.”

“What truth?”

Chief Adebisi looked directly at Damilola.

“Your father didn’t destroy every document.”

“He secretly kept one copy.”

Damilola stared at the envelope.

His name was written across it.

Beneath it…

Another name.

One he had never seen before.

Possible Biological Father: Samuel Ekanem.

The room went completely silent.

Damilola whispered,

“Who… is Samuel Ekanem?”

Mama Bose’s face lost every trace of colour.

She slowly sank back into the chair.

Then she whispered the words nobody expected.

“I’ve never met any man called Samuel Ekanem.”

To be continued…

Engagement Question: Do you believe Mama Bose is telling the truth, or do you think she’s still hiding something about Samuel Ekanem?
