The Reckoning

3 min read Jul 13, 2026 Church Drama

The days following exposure blurred together in a haze Bimbola barely remembered afterward. Church elders called emergency meetings. Members whispered in clusters that fell silent whenever she approached. The women’s prayer group she’d led for six years quietly stopped inviting her to their gatherings.

Oluwasegun moved into the guest room the same night, unable to look at her without visible pain crossing his face. He didn’t shout. He didn’t rage. His silence was somehow worse, a grief so profound it seemed to have swallowed his voice entirely.

“I need time,” he told her simply, three days after Solomon’s public confession, the first real words he’d spoken to her since the sanctuary. “I don’t know what I believe about us right now. I need time to understand who I’ve actually been married to for nine years.”

Bimbola accepted this without argument, understanding she’d forfeited the right to demand anything from him.

Meanwhile, Osas, furious that Solomon’s public exposure had jeopardized his own quiet extraction of payment, confronted him outside the bukka where they’d previously met.

“You destroyed everything,” Osas snapped. “I told you to wait.”

“I don’t answer to you,” Solomon said, unmoved, some of the weight visibly lifted from his shoulders despite the chaos he’d caused. “My sister is dead. I did what I came to do.”

“And I still haven’t been paid,” Osas growled, stepping closer, years of simmering menace finally surfacing. “You think this is over? I’ll get what I’m owed with or without your help.”

The confrontation drew attention from nearby shop owners, one of whom recognized Osas from an old debt dispute and quietly alerted a police contact, setting into motion consequences neither man had anticipated. Within days, Osas found himself under investigation for unrelated matters that had been simmering long before Bimbola ever reentered his life, his attention pulled away from her entirely as he scrambled to protect himself.

Solomon, meanwhile, found himself facing an unexpected reckoning of his own. The church, despite everything, extended an invitation for him to speak privately with the elders, not in judgment, but in an attempt to understand the full weight of what had driven him to such a public confrontation.

“I don’t regret exposing her,” he told them honestly. “But I didn’t expect it to feel like this afterward. I thought I would feel like Adaeze had finally gotten justice. I just feel empty.”

It was Oluwasegun, surprisingly, who sought Solomon out directly, finding him outside the church compound one evening, both men carrying grief that had nowhere left to go.

“I’m not here to forgive you,” Oluwasegun said. “I’m still deciding what I feel about my wife, let alone you. But I wanted to understand. Tell me about your sister.”

Solomon, disarmed by the request, found himself speaking honestly for the first time since arriving in Lagos, describing Adaeze’s laugh, her dreams of a small provisions shop, the devastating call that had informed him of her death. Oluwasegun listened without interruption, a pastor’s instinct for holding space for pain overriding his personal devastation.

“Grief makes us do things we don’t always recognize afterward,” Oluwasegun said finally. “I understand that better now than I did a week ago.”

To be continued…

Do you think Oluwasegun and Solomon’s conversation changes anything for Bimbola’s future in the church?
