The Return

My name is Chinaza Obi, but everyone calls me Naza. At 27 years old, I am married to Chief Raymond Obi, a man twenty years older than me. On the surface, my life looks perfect. We live in a beautiful home in Ikoyi, with staff, expensive cars, and the kind of respect that comes with money and status. People see us as the ideal couple. But behind these walls, my marriage is cold and empty.

Raymond is a powerful man in both business and politics. He is always traveling, always attending meetings, and always surrounded by people who want something from him. When he is home, his attention is elsewhere. Our intimate moments are rare, quick, and leave me feeling more lonely than satisfied. I have learned to accept it. This is what my family arranged, and this is what I must live with.

That Friday evening, everything began to shift.

I was in the kitchen giving instructions to the cook when I heard my husband’s loud, cheerful voice from the living room.

“Kene! Welcome back, my brother!”

Curious, I wiped my hands on a napkin and walked out. Standing beside Raymond was a tall, well-built man. He wore a fitted black shirt that showed off his broad shoulders and strong arms. His skin was deep dark, his beard neatly trimmed, and his presence filled the room. This was Kenechukwu Obi, Raymond’s younger brother, who had just returned from London after many years away.

“Naza, come and meet my younger brother,” Raymond said proudly. “Kene, this is my wife, Chinaza.”

Kene stretched out his hand with a calm smile. “Finally, I get to meet the woman who stole my brother’s heart.”

When our palms touched, something electric passed through me. His hand was warm, firm, and lingered a second longer than necessary. I quickly pulled away, but not before I caught the way his eyes moved over me — slow, deliberate, taking in my face, my neck, and the curve of my body in my simple house dress.

“Welcome home,” I said softly, trying to steady my breathing.

That night, we had a family dinner. Raymond spent most of the time on his phone, discussing political matters and laughing with someone on the other end. But Kene was different. He was fully present. He asked me questions about my life, what I enjoyed doing, how I had been managing the house. Every time our eyes met across the table, I felt a strange warmth spread through my chest. I kept adjusting in my seat, suddenly too aware of myself.

After dinner, Raymond disappeared into his study as usual, leaving me to entertain his brother. I stepped out to the balcony to get some fresh air. A few minutes later, Kene joined me.

“The night is beautiful,” he said quietly, standing close beside me.

“Yes, it is,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.

He turned to look at me. His gaze was intense, almost too much. “My brother is a very lucky man.”

The way he said those words sent a shiver down my spine. There was something in his tone, something deeper than a simple compliment. His eyes dropped to my lips for a brief moment. The air between us felt thick, charged with something I had not felt in years. I could smell his cologne — rich, masculine, and dangerously appealing.

“I should go inside,” I whispered, even though my body wanted to stay.

Kene gave a small smile. “Goodnight, Naza.”

As I walked away, I could feel his eyes following me until I entered the house. My heart was racing. My skin felt hot. That night, when Raymond finally came to bed and reached for me, I felt nothing. My mind kept drifting to the man sleeping in the guest room downstairs.

For the first time in a long time, I went to bed with thoughts I knew I should not be having.
