The Second Name
The basement went cold in a way that didn’t feel natural.
Not AC cold.
Not weather cold.
Something deeper.
Like the building itself had started listening.
Kola tightened his grip on Teniola’s hand.
“We are leaving. Now.”
But she didn’t move.
Her eyes were fixed on the ceiling.
The footsteps upstairs had multiplied.
Not random anymore.
Organized.
Like people positioning themselves.
Waiting.
Morenike whispered, “Teni, please…”
Still nothing.
Teniola was stuck inside something else now.
Something pulling her inward.
Not fear alone.
Recognition mixed with confusion.
Then she finally spoke.
“They said original one.”
Her voice was shaking.
“What does that even mean?”
No one answered.
Because no one had a clean answer anymore.
Above them…
The church had changed tone.
The singing upstairs stopped.
Prayer session ended abruptly.
Now it was just movement.
Quiet commands.
Doors locking.
Kola looked around the basement.
“We don’t have much time.”
He pointed at the wall.
“There’s another exit.”
Morenike frowned.
“How do you know that?”
Kola didn’t answer immediately.
Then softly,
“Because I’ve been here before.”
Teniola turned sharply.
“What?”
He avoided her eyes.
“Not like this.”
But that wasn’t comforting.
That was worse.
Above them, the security man’s voice came again.
“They are still inside.”
Another voice answered through a phone.
“Confirm both of them.”
Teniola froze.
“Both?”
Kola’s jaw tightened.
“That confirms it.”
Morenike looked between them.
“Confirms what?”
Kola finally said it.
“They are not just looking for you.”
A pause.
“They are looking for both versions.”
Teniola stepped back.
“What are you talking about?”
But Kola was already moving.
Pulling at a corner of the wall where old pipes ran.
“There’s a passage here.”
He pushed.
The wall shifted slightly.
Dust fell.
Then a narrow hidden corridor appeared.
Before anyone could react…
A loud bang came from above.
The altar door had been opened.
Heavy footsteps now coming down the stairs.
Morenike panicked.
“They are coming!”
Kola grabbed Teniola.
“Move!”
They rushed into the narrow passage.
Dark.
Tight.
Barely enough space to walk.
Behind them…
Voices echoed.
“She is in the basement!”
“Don’t let her reach the exit!”
Teniola’s breath became uneven.
Her mind was breaking between reality and something else.
Images kept flashing now.
Faster.
A woman standing in front of her.
Saying,
“You’re not supposed to know this name.”
Another flash.
A mirror.
Two reflections.
But only one moving.
She gasped.
Kola looked back.
“Keep moving!”
The passage led to a small iron door.
Locked.
Kola kicked it once.
Nothing.
Again.
The voices behind them got closer.
Morenike cried out softly.
“We are trapped!”
Teniola suddenly stepped forward.
“Move.”
Kola looked at her.
“What?”
“I said move.”
She placed her palm on the iron door.
Closed her eyes.
Everyone paused.
“Teni…”
But she wasn’t listening.
Her breathing slowed.
Like something inside her had shifted control.
Then she whispered,
“I’ve opened this before.”
Kola frowned.
“You have not.”
But she shook her head slowly.
“I have.”
Then she pressed something near the edge of the door.
A tiny hidden latch clicked.
The door unlocked.
Kola stared.
“How did you—”
But there was no time.
The door opened.
Cold air rushed in.
Freedom.
They stepped out into a narrow alley behind the church.
Early morning light.
Dusty ground.
Market women already setting up stalls nearby.
Life pretending nothing was happening.
But behind them…
The church door opened again.
Footsteps spilled out.
Kola pulled them forward.
“Run!”
They didn’t stop running until they reached a deserted street.
Only then did they slow down.
Morenike bent over, breathing hard.
“What kind of church is that?”
No one answered immediately.
Teniola was staring at her own hands.
Shaking.
“I remember opening that door,” she whispered.
Kola turned.
“When?”
She looked up slowly.
“I don’t know.”
A pause.
“But I remember someone teaching me how.”
Silence.
Then Kola said something carefully.
“Teach you?”
Teniola nodded.
“Yes.”
Her voice broke slightly.
“A woman.”
Morenike frowned.
“Who?”
Teniola closed her eyes.
The memory came clearer now.
Not fully.
But enough.
A room.
Soft light.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Direct.
Saying,
“If anything happens, you will find your way back here.”
Teniola opened her eyes.
“I think…”
She swallowed.
“…I think I had another mother.”
Silence dropped.
Even Kola froze.
Morenike stepped back.
“What are you saying?”
Teniola shook her head slowly.
“I don’t know.”
But her body knew.
Her body remembered what her mind refused to accept.
Then Kola’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered immediately.
Silence first.
Then a voice came through.
Distorted.
But familiar in tone.
“Did she remember the door?”
Kola’s face changed instantly.
He stepped away slightly.
“Who is this?”
The voice continued.
“You should have left her memory buried.”
Kola’s grip tightened.
“What do you want?”
A pause.
Then the voice said something that made all three of them go still.
“Bring her to Warehouse 9.”
Silence.
Then the voice added calmly.
“Or we activate the second identity.”
The call ended.
Teniola stared at Kola.
“What did they just say?”
Kola didn’t answer immediately.
Because for the first time…
He looked like he was no longer in control of the situation.
He looked like someone who had been following instructions…
Until the instructions suddenly turned into something bigger than him.
He finally whispered,
“They are not done with you.”
Teniola frowned.
“Why?”
Kola looked at her slowly.
Because what he said next…
Changed everything again.
“Because you were never meant to be one person in the first place.”
To be continued…
