The Test of Temptation

7 min read Jul 4, 2026 Church Drama

Two years had passed since Yusuf first arrived in Potiphar’s house, and his reputation had grown throughout all of Memphis. Other wealthy Egyptians would ask Potiphar how he managed his affairs so efficiently, and he would always credit his remarkable Hebrew slave.

“That young man is worth his weight in gold,” Potiphar would say. “Everything prospers under his management.”

Yusuf had grown from a scared seventeen-year-old into a confident, capable nineteen-year-old man. The harsh experiences of betrayal and slavery had matured him, but they hadn’t broken his spirit. He was still the same person who had once shared dreams with innocent excitement, but now he was wiser about when to speak and when to remain silent.

He was also, everyone noticed, remarkably handsome. The combination of his natural good looks, his confident bearing, and his reputation for wisdom made him attractive to many of the women in Egyptian society. But Yusuf, remembering the values his father had taught him, kept himself focused on his work and his relationship with God.

This caught the attention of Potiphar’s wife, Zuleika.

Zuleika was a woman accustomed to getting whatever she wanted. She was beautiful, wealthy, and married to one of the most powerful men in Egypt. She had servants to attend to her every need, expensive clothes and jewelry, and the freedom to spend her days however she pleased.

But she was also bored and restless. Potiphar was often away on military duties, and when he was home, he was frequently busy with official business. Their marriage had become more of a political arrangement than a relationship based on love or companionship.

As Yusuf’s responsibilities in the household grew, he increasingly had to interact with Zuleika on household matters. She began to notice not just his competence, but his physical attractiveness and his respectful but confident manner.

“He’s not like the other slaves,” she confided to her friend Nebet one afternoon as they sat in her private garden. “There’s something different about him. Something… noble.”

“He’s still a slave, Zuleika,” Nebet reminded her. “And a foreign slave at that.”

“But such an interesting foreigner,” Zuleika mused. “And my husband trusts him completely. He says Yusuf manages everything so well that he never has to worry about household affairs.”

What started as admiration slowly grew into something more dangerous – desire. Zuleika began finding excuses to call Yusuf to her private chambers for consultations about household matters that could easily have been handled by servants.

Yusuf noticed the change but tried to ignore it. He would answer her questions quickly and professionally, then excuse himself as soon as possible. But Zuleika’s interest was becoming more obvious and more persistent.

One hot afternoon, when most of the household was resting during the heat of the day, Zuleika summoned Yusuf to her chambers to discuss the menu for an upcoming dinner party.

When he arrived, he found her dressed in a flowing gown of the finest linen, with golden jewelry that caught the light from the oil lamps. She had clearly taken special care with her appearance.

“Come in, Yusuf,” she said, her voice softer than usual. “Sit down. We have much to discuss.”

Yusuf remained standing near the doorway. “What can I help you with, my lady?”

“The dinner party menu, of course. But first, tell me about yourself. In all this time, we’ve only talked about work. I know nothing about you as a person.”

“There’s not much to know, my lady. I’m here to serve your household.”

“Surely there’s more to you than that.” She moved closer to him. “You’re young, handsome, intelligent. Do you never think about… personal matters? About companionship?”

Yusuf felt alarm bells going off in his mind. This conversation was heading in a very dangerous direction.

“My lady, I think we should focus on the dinner party arrangements. What dishes would you like me to order from the kitchen?”

But Zuleika was not easily discouraged. Over the following weeks, her advances became more and more obvious. She would touch his arm when speaking to him, stand closer to him than necessary, and make comments about his appearance.

Yusuf tried every strategy he could think of to discourage her without being directly disrespectful. He would bring other servants with him when meeting with her. He would keep their conversations strictly focused on business. When she made personal comments, he would redirect the conversation to household matters.

But Zuleika was persistent, and she was growing bolder.

One morning, when Potiphar had left for a three-day military inspection tour, she cornered Yusuf in the storage room where he was checking inventory.

“Yusuf,” she said, closing the door behind her, “we need to stop playing these games.”

“My lady, I don’t know what you mean.”

“You know exactly what I mean.” She moved closer to him, her intentions now completely clear. “My husband is away. No one would know. You’re a man, I’m a woman, and we’re both young and alive.”

Yusuf backed away from her, his heart pounding. “My lady, please. This is wrong. Your husband trusts me.”

“My husband doesn’t need to know.”

“But God would know,” Yusuf said firmly. “And I would know. I cannot betray Captain Potiphar’s trust, and I cannot sin against God.”

Zuleika’s eyes flashed with anger. She was not used to being rejected by anyone, especially not by a slave.

“Don’t you dare lecture me about right and wrong,” she snapped. “You’re a slave! I could have you beaten or sold if I wanted to!”

“Then do what you must, my lady. But I will not compromise my principles.”

This rejection only made Zuleika more determined. For several more weeks, she continued her pursuit, becoming increasingly aggressive and increasingly angry at Yusuf’s continued refusal.

The situation came to a crisis one afternoon when the house was nearly empty. Most of the servants had been sent on various errands, and Zuleika knew that Yusuf would be alone in the main house, working on the monthly accounts.

She had planned this carefully. She dressed in her most seductive clothing and waited until she was certain they would not be interrupted.

When she found Yusuf working at a table in the main hall, she approached him with a look of determination that frightened him.

“Yusuf,” she said in a voice that trembled with emotion, “I can’t stand this anymore. I think about you constantly. I dream about you at night. Come to bed with me.”

She reached out and grabbed his cloak, pulling him toward her with surprising strength.

Yusuf knew that this was the moment of ultimate decision. Everything he had worked for, everything he had built in this household, hung in the balance. If he gave in to her desires, he would betray every principle he held dear. If he continued to refuse, he risked her wrath and possibly his life.

But the choice, for him, was clear.

“No!” he said firmly, pulling away from her so forcefully that his cloak tore and remained in her hands. “How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”

He ran from the room, leaving Zuleika standing there with his torn cloak in her hands, her face twisted with rage and humiliation.

The fury of a woman scorned is a terrible thing, and Zuleika’s fury was about to change Yusuf’s life once again.

Lesson from Episode 6: Integrity is tested not when things are going badly, but when we’re tempted to compromise our principles for personal gain or to avoid consequences. Yusuf had everything to lose by refusing Zuleika – his position, his comfort, possibly his life. But he understood that some things are more important than temporary benefits. When we stand firm in our principles, especially when it costs us something, we build character that will serve us for the rest of our lives.
