The Truth Hidden in the CCTV

The warehouse doors slammed shut with a metallic bang.

Kola rushed to one of them and pulled with all his strength.

Nothing.

He kicked it twice.

Still nothing.

“They’ve locked us in.”

The men standing near the files didn’t even react.

It was as if they had seen this happen many times before.

Teniola was still breathing heavily.

Her head felt like it would split open.

Not because of pain anymore.

Because memories were arriving too fast.

Different birthdays.

Different schools.

Different voices calling her name.

Some called her Teniola.

Others called her…

Amara.

She froze.

“Amara?”

The name slipped out before she realized she had spoken.

The second Teniola looked at her.

“So… you remember that name.”

Kola turned immediately.

“Who is Amara?”

The second Teniola smiled sadly.

“The name she had before Pastor Gideon adopted her.”

Silence.

Teniola looked up slowly.

“My real name…”

The second Teniola nodded.

“Amara.”

One of the men pushed a television monitor toward them.

Old.

Dusty.

Beside it sat a CCTV recorder.

The man inserted a flash drive.

“You deserve to see this.”

The screen came alive.

Date:

July 18, 2003.

Teniola frowned.

“The day of the accident?”

“No.”

The man replied.

“Two days before it.”

The footage showed the church compound.

Children running.

Workers arranging chairs.

Cars entering.

Then…

A black SUV stopped outside.

A man stepped out.

Teniola couldn’t see his face clearly.

He carried a little girl.

About five years old.

As he walked closer to the church entrance…

The camera finally captured the child’s face.

Teniola covered her mouth.

It was her.

Or at least…

The little girl who looked exactly like her.

The recording continued.

Pastor Gideon came outside.

The two men spoke for several minutes.

No audio.

Just gestures.

Then…

The man handed the child to Pastor Gideon.

He drove away.

Never looking back.

Silence filled the warehouse.

Morenike whispered,

“So she really was brought here…”

The footage changed.

Another camera.

Inside the church office.

Pastor Gideon sat alone.

The child slept on a couch.

Then…

A woman entered.

Elegant.

Well dressed.

Confident.

The second Teniola’s face changed immediately.

“No…”

Teniola looked at her.

“You know her?”

The second Teniola nodded slowly.

“Very well.”

The woman in the video handed Pastor Gideon a thick brown envelope.

Money.

Lots of it.

Pastor Gideon pushed it back.

He refused.

The woman insisted.

Finally…

He accepted it.

Kola frowned.

“What was he being paid for?”

The second Teniola whispered,

“To keep silent.”

The footage skipped again.

Three days later.

Pastor Gideon and the same woman were arguing.

This time violently.

She pointed toward the sleeping child.

Pastor Gideon shouted back.

Though there was no sound…

His lips were clear enough to read.

Kola stared at the screen.

“He said…”

He swallowed.

“…’I promised to protect her.'”

The woman slapped him.

Then stormed out.

The room became quiet again.

Teniola looked at the screen without blinking.

“My father…”

For the first time…

She saw him not as a criminal.

But as someone caught in something far bigger than himself.

Superintendent Hassan suddenly entered the warehouse.

Breathing heavily.

“I’ve been looking everywhere!”

Kola frowned.

“How did you get in?”

“The back entrance.”

He looked around.

Then his eyes landed on the CCTV screen.

“What is this?”

Before anyone could answer…

His phone rang.

He answered immediately.

After only a few seconds…

His expression changed completely.

“What?”

Silence.

“No… that’s impossible.”

He ended the call.

Kola stepped forward.

“What happened?”

The superintendent looked directly at Teniola.

“The forensic lab just finished examining the trailer driver’s confession.”

Everyone waited.

“The signature is genuine.”

Teniola nodded slowly.

“So…”

“But…”

He took a deep breath.

“The confession itself…”

“…was typed six months after the driver died.”

Silence.

Nobody understood.

Morenike frowned.

“How can a dead man confess after dying?”

The superintendent looked disturbed.

“He couldn’t.”

He slowly looked around the warehouse.

“Which means someone forged the entire confession.”

Teniola’s legs almost gave way.

“So my father…”

“He may have been framed.”

Just then…

The second Teniola walked calmly toward another metal cabinet.

She opened it with a key that was already hanging around her neck.

Inside were dozens of old case files.

She searched quietly.

Then pulled out one.

She stared at the cover for a long moment.

Her hands began to shake.

“No…”

Kola noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

She slowly handed the file to Teniola.

The cover read:

PROJECT MIRROR

Below it…

A subtitle.

Subjects: Amara Nwosu and Daniel Akinwale

Teniola frowned.

Daniel.

The missing son.

She opened the file.

The very first page contained two passport photographs.

One was hers.

The other…

Was Daniel.

Below the photographs were six words.

“Biological siblings. DNA confirmed.”

The warehouse fell silent.

Everyone looked at each other in disbelief.

Teniola’s breathing became ragged.

“No…”

Her voice cracked.

“If Daniel is my biological brother…”

She looked toward the hospital, as though her father could somehow hear her.

“Then Pastor Gideon…”

“…was telling the truth.”

Kola slowly closed the file.

Which raised an even more terrifying question.

If Pastor Gideon wasn’t their biological father…

Then who was?

Before anyone could speak…

The warehouse speakers suddenly crackled to life.

A woman’s voice echoed through the building.

Calm.

Elegant.

The same woman from the CCTV footage.

“If you’ve reached this point…”

“…then you’ve discovered exactly what I wanted you to discover.”

Everyone looked up.

The voice continued.

“My name is Evelyn Nwosu.”

Teniola’s heart nearly stopped.

“And I…”

A pause.

“…am your mother.”

To be continued…
