“…what if this is a trap?”

Amara’s voice was low, but the fear inside it was clear.

Tobi didn’t answer immediately.

And that alone made her chest tighten.

“Tobi,” she pressed. “Answer me.”

He finally spoke.

“It might be.”

Silence.

Amara blinked.

“You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

Her heart started beating faster again.

“Then why are you standing there saying ‘good’ like this is some kind of win?”

“Because if it’s a trap,” Tobi said calmly, “it means he’s hiding something.”

“That doesn’t make me feel better!”

“It should,” he replied. “It means we’re getting closer.”

Amara stared at him.

“You keep saying ‘we’ like I’m not the one going to enter the trap.”

“You won’t be alone.”

She folded her arms.

“I don’t like the sound of this.”

“I know,” he said. “But listen to me carefully.”

His tone changed again.

Focused.

Serious.

“From now on, you don’t make any move without me knowing.”

Amara nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

“When he sends the location, you show me first.”

“Fine.”

“And when you go there…”

He paused.

Amara’s heart skipped.

“What?”

“I’ll already be there.”

She frowned.

“How?”

“I’ll track the place.”

“You can do that?”

“Yes.”

The confidence in his voice was unsettling.

But also… reassuring.

Amara exhaled slowly.

“This is starting to feel like a real crime situation.”

“It is,” Tobi said simply.

That didn’t help.

At all.

Her phone buzzed again.

Both of them looked down at it.

Femi.

Message.

Amara opened it slowly.

Her eyes scanned the screen.

Then widened.

“What?” Tobi asked.

She turned the phone toward him.

“It’s not a café,” she said.

Tobi read the message.

Then his expression darkened slightly.

“…it’s a hotel.”

Amara’s stomach dropped.

“A hotel?” she repeated.

Tobi nodded slowly.

“Yeah.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

“What kind of nonsense is this?” Amara said, her voice rising. “He wants to see me in a hotel? Is he mad?”

Tobi didn’t respond immediately.

He was thinking.

Deeply.

“This is not normal,” Amara continued. “Not after everything. Not when he’s engaged. Not when—”

“I know,” Tobi cut in quietly.

She looked at him.

“This is wrong.”

“Yes.”

“Then I’m not going.”

Tobi didn’t argue.

Not immediately.

He just asked one question.

“What if that’s exactly where we need to be?”

Amara froze.

“What?”

“If he feels safe there, he might talk freely.”

Amara shook her head.

“No. No, I’m not comfortable with that.”

“That’s valid.”

“So we cancel.”

Tobi tilted his head slightly.

“Or we control it.”

She frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you don’t walk in blindly.”

Amara waited.

Her heart still racing.

“We plan it,” Tobi continued. “Every step.”

“And if something goes wrong?”

“It won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

Tobi held her gaze.

“I’ll be there.”

That again.

That assurance.

Amara hated how much it calmed her.

“This is risky,” she said.

“I know.”

“I just found out my best friend betrayed me and now I’m about to meet my ex in a hotel like some kind of secret agent.”

Tobi almost smiled.

“Life changed fast.”

“That’s not funny.”

“I’m not laughing.”

Amara sighed deeply.

Her head was starting to hurt.

Everything felt too fast.

Too intense.

Too real.

“What exactly do you think he wants?” she asked.

Tobi’s expression hardened slightly.

“I don’t think this meeting is about feelings.”

Amara’s chest tightened.

“Then what is it about?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said,

“I think he’s trying to control the situation.”

That made her uneasy.

“How?”

“If he suspects anything…”

Amara’s eyes widened.

“You think he knows?”

“I don’t know,” Tobi said. “But we have to assume he might.”

Her breathing became uneven again.

“And if he does?”

Tobi’s voice dropped.

“Then this meeting becomes dangerous.”

Silence.

Pure silence.

Amara looked at the phone again.

The message was still there.

Femi:
Come alone. Room 304.

Her stomach twisted.

“He said come alone,” she whispered.

Tobi nodded.

“I saw that.”

Amara looked up at him.

“I don’t like this.”

“I know.”

“Not at all.”

“I know.”

She ran her hand through her hair.

Frustration building again.

“So what do we do?”

Tobi stepped closer.

Lowered his voice.

“You go.”

Amara’s eyes widened immediately.

“Excuse me?”

“You go,” he repeated. “But not alone.”

Her heart skipped.

“How?”

“I’ll be inside the building before you arrive.”

“And if he sees you?”

“He won’t.”

“You sound very confident.”

“I have to be.”

Amara stared at him.

Trying to read him.

Trying to understand him.

“You’ve done this before,” she said slowly.

Tobi didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

That answer sent a small chill through her.

“Wow.”

A brief silence.

Then Amara asked,

“And what if he tries something?”

Tobi didn’t hesitate.

“I’ll handle it.”

Her heart skipped again.

That certainty.

That calm.

It was dangerous.

But also…

Comforting.

Amara looked back at her phone.

Room 304.

Hotel.

Come alone.

Everything about it screamed trouble.

But walking away?

That might be worse.

She took a deep breath.

Then another.

Then she looked at Tobi.

“…okay.”

He didn’t react immediately.

“Okay?”

“I’ll go.”

Tobi nodded slowly.

“Good.”

“But if anything feels off,” she added quickly, “I’m leaving. I don’t care about your investigation.”

“Fair.”

“And you better actually be there.”

“I will.”

Amara held his gaze for a moment.

Then looked away.

Trying to steady herself.

Trying not to panic.

Because in a few hours…

She was going to walk into a hotel room…

With the man who broke her…

Who might be a criminal…

Who might be using her…

And who might already suspect something.

Her chest tightened again.

“This is a bad idea,” she whispered.

Tobi didn’t disagree.

“It might be.”

Amara looked at him.

“Then why does it feel like we have no choice?”

Tobi’s expression turned serious again.

Because the truth was simple.

And heavy.

“Because,” he said quietly, “we’re already too deep in it.”

Amara swallowed.

And for the first time since this started…

She truly felt it.

This was no longer just heartbreak.

This was danger.

Real danger.

And she was walking straight into it.

To be continued…

You're almost done!
