What’s in the Bag

Inside the bag…

Bundles.

Tightly wrapped bundles of cash.

Stacks and stacks of naira.

My breath caught in my throat.

“Omo…”

I pulled one out slowly.

₦1,000 notes.

Fresh.

Neatly arranged.

I checked another bundle.

Same thing.

Another one.

Same.

My heart started racing.

Because this wasn’t ₦50 million type again.

This was…

More.

Way more.

I swallowed hard and looked deeper into the bag.

That was when I saw it.

A small black pouch, tucked under the money.

My hand froze.

Because somehow…

I knew the money wasn’t the real problem.

Slowly, I picked the pouch.

Light.

Too light.

I opened it carefully.

And everything inside me dropped.

A gun.

Small.

Black.

Cold.

Just lying there like it belonged to me.

I stared at it for a few seconds, trying to process what I was seeing.

“This is not real…”

But it was.

Very real.

My hand started shaking immediately.

I dropped the pouch back into the bag like it burned me.

My chest tightened.

“Omo… omo… what is this?”

I stood up quickly and started pacing the room.

“This is not money again.”

This was different.

This was dangerous.

This was something that could end my life instantly.

My phone buzzed.

I froze.

Looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Of course.

I didn’t even think twice this time.

I picked it immediately.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then—

“You’ve opened it.”

My throat went dry.

“What is this?” I asked, my voice low.

No answer.

Just calm breathing.

“What do you want me to do with that?” I added quickly.

A short pause.

Then—

“Keep it safe.”

I frowned.

“For what?”

Silence.

Then—

“For tomorrow.”

My chest tightened.

Tomorrow again.

Another task.

Another problem.

“I don’t want this,” I said immediately.

“This is too much. I can’t—”

“You can.”

Sharp.

Direct.

Final.

My voice dropped.

“No… this one is different.”

Another pause.

Then—

“That bag you’re holding…”

Silence.

“…is worth more than your entire life.”

My heart skipped.

“And right now…”

Pause.

“You are responsible for it.”

My legs felt weak.

Because I understood what that meant.

If anything happens to that bag…

I’m finished.

“Why me?” I asked quietly.

“Why are you people doing this to me?”

For the first time…

There was a slight change in his tone.

Not softer.

Just… different.

“You were not forced.”

My chest tightened instantly.

“You made a choice.”

Silence.

Then—

“And now you’re part of the system.”

The line went dead.

I stood there.

Frozen.

The phone still in my hand.

Because that word…

“System”…

It didn’t sound normal.

It sounded deep.

Like something bigger than just money.

I slowly turned and looked at the bag on my bed.

Money.

Gun.

Problem.

All in one place.

“Omo… I don enter.”

This wasn’t a mistake anymore.

This wasn’t chance.

This was something organized.

Something planned.

Something dangerous.

I sat down slowly.

My head spinning.

Because now the fear was different.

Before, it was just:

“What is happening?”

Now it was:

“What happens if I mess up?”

My phone buzzed again.

I checked it.

Another message.

“Don’t leave your house.”

Another one.

“Don’t call anyone.”

And the last one:

“Sleep if you can.”

I laughed.

A dry, empty laugh.

“Sleep?”

With a gun and this kind of money in my room?

Who sleeps in that kind of situation?

I stood up and locked my door again.

Checked the windows.

Closed everything properly.

Even pushed my chair against the door.

Just in case.

Then I went back to the bed.

Sat down.

And stared at the bag again.

Because somehow…

It felt like it was staring back at me.

That night…

Every sound felt louder.

Every movement felt closer.

Every second felt longer.

And deep down…

I knew one thing for sure:

Tomorrow…

Was going to be worse.

To be continued…

You're almost done!
