THE LONGEST WEEK OF MY LIFE

4 min read Jul 14, 2026 Youth & Campus Life

I counted again.

Then again.

Maybe I was wrong.

I opened the calendar on my phone.

No.

I wasn’t wrong.

My period was nine days late.

I sat on my bed, staring at the screen until the numbers became blurry.

“Amara?”

Teni’s voice sounded far away.

“You’ve been looking at that calendar for almost ten minutes.”

I looked up.

“I think… something is wrong.”

She walked over.

“What happened?”

I swallowed.

“My period is late.”

The smile on her face disappeared.

“How late?”

“Nine days.”

She sat beside me without saying a word.

“You’ve never been this late before?”

I shook my head.

“Never.”

Neither of us spoke.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Finally, Teni asked quietly,

“Have you been under stress?”

“Exams.”

She nodded.

“Anything else?”

I knew what she meant.

I lowered my head.

“Daniel.”

She closed her eyes briefly.

“Okay.”

For the first time since we became roommates, she didn’t lecture me.

She simply held my hand.

“We’ll face whatever it is.”

That afternoon, I called Daniel.

“Can we meet?”

His cheerful voice immediately changed.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’ll tell you when I see you.”

We met behind the old lecture theatre.

The moment he saw my face, he knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

I couldn’t look at him.

“My period…”

I paused.

“It’s late.”

His smile faded.

“How late?”

“Nine days.”

He didn’t speak.

I finally looked up.

He looked just as frightened as I felt.

“You think…”

“I don’t know.”

He sat down slowly.

For almost a minute, neither of us spoke.

The noise from students passing by faded into the background.

Finally, Daniel whispered,

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“So am I.”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen.”

“I know.”

“I should have protected you better.”

Those words made my eyes fill with tears.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“It wasn’t only your responsibility.”

He shook his head.

“I still should have done better.”

I reached for his hand.

“We both made the decision.”

His fingers tightened around mine.

“We’ll face whatever comes.”

I wanted to sound brave.

The truth was…

I was terrified.

That night, sleep refused to come.

Every possible future played in my mind.

How would I tell my parents?

What would happen to school?

What would people in church say?

Would they still look at me the same way?

Or would I forever become…

“The church girl who got pregnant.”

I buried my face in my pillow and cried silently.

Not because I was afraid of a baby.

But because I was afraid of disappointing everyone I loved.

The next morning, I woke up to a message from my mum.

“Good morning, my daughter. I prayed for you today. God will guide every decision you make this week. I love you.”

I broke down again.

If only she knew.

Later that day, Daniel met me outside the faculty.

He looked exhausted.

“I spoke to a pharmacist.”

I looked at him.

“He said stress can delay it.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“But…”

He hesitated.

“…he also said we shouldn’t assume.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

He reached into his backpack.

“I bought a pregnancy test.”

I stared at the small paper bag in his hand.

Suddenly…

Everything became real.

Not just fear.

Not just imagination.

An answer was waiting inside that little box.

Daniel looked at me.

“We don’t have to do it today.”

I looked at the bag.

Then back at him.

“No.”

My voice shook.

“I don’t think I can survive another night not knowing.”

We agreed to meet the next morning.

Neither of us spoke much before leaving.

As I walked back to the hostel, the weight of the unknown sat heavily on my chest.

For the first time in my life…

I truly understood how one decision could change everything.

And tomorrow…

I would find out whether my life had changed forever.

Do you think fear changes the way people see their choices, or does it simply reveal what mattered to them all along?

To be continued…
