TWO LINES OR ONE

4 min read Jul 14, 2026 Youth & Campus Life

I didn’t sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I imagined different outcomes.

One moment, I was standing in front of my parents trying to explain myself.

The next, I imagined leaving school.

Then I imagined church members whispering as I walked past them.

By morning, I was exhausted.

At exactly 8 a.m., Daniel called.

“I’m outside.”

I took a deep breath, picked up my bag and walked downstairs.

Neither of us spoke much on the way.

The silence between us wasn’t awkward.

It was heavy.

We went to a quiet pharmacy a few streets away from campus. The pharmacist explained how to use the test and pointed us to the restroom.

Daniel handed me the small box.

“I’ll wait here.”

I nodded.

My hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

Inside the restroom, I stared at the test kit for what felt like forever.

“This can’t be my life,” I whispered.

I remembered my first day on campus.

The excitement.

The dreams.

The confidence that I knew exactly how life would go.

Nobody ever plans for moments like this.

I finally took the test.

Then I placed it on the sink.

Three minutes.

Just three minutes.

But they felt longer than three years.

I prayed.

Not a long prayer.

Just one sentence.

“Lord… whatever happens, don’t leave me.”

The timer on my phone beeped.

I looked down.

One line.

I blinked.

Then looked again.

Still one line.

I picked it up, afraid my eyes were deceiving me.

One line.

Negative.

I covered my mouth as tears rushed down my face.

Not tears of happiness alone.

Tears of relief.

Tears of fear.

Tears of realizing how close I had come to a future I wasn’t prepared for.

When I stepped outside, Daniel stood up immediately.

He searched my face.

I couldn’t speak.

I simply held up the test.

He looked at it.

Then closed his eyes.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then I saw tears roll down his cheeks.

He wasn’t crying loudly.

He just stood there, thanking God under his breath.

“I don’t deserve this mercy,” he whispered.

Neither do I, I thought.

We walked to a nearby park and sat under a tree.

The relief was real.

But something else sat between us.

Silence.

Daniel was the first to speak.

“Amara…”

“Hmm?”

“I’ve been thinking all night.”

“So have I.”

He looked at me.

“If this test had been positive…”

He paused.

“I would’ve stood by you.”

“I know.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“But I also realized something.”

“What?”

“We’ve been acting like love alone is enough.”

I stared at him.

“And it isn’t.”

His words hurt because they were true.

“We crossed boundaries we both said we’d never cross.”

I nodded slowly.

“We kept saying, ‘It won’t happen to us.'”

He gave a sad smile.

“And yet… here we are.”

I looked down at the pregnancy test in the paper bag.

“This scare has changed me.”

He reached for my hand.

“Me too.”

“I don’t ever want to feel like this again.”

“Neither do I.”

We sat there quietly.

Then Daniel said something I’d never expected.

“I think…”

He took a deep breath.

“…we need to change how we’re dating.”

I looked at him.

“No more putting ourselves in situations where emotions make decisions for us.”

I felt tears fill my eyes again.

“You’d really do that?”

He smiled gently.

“I love you too much not to.”

For the first time since we’d started dating…

I felt safer than I had ever felt.

Not because everything was perfect.

But because we were finally choosing honesty over impulse.

As we stood to leave, my phone buzzed.

It was a message from my mother.

“How are you today, my daughter?”

I smiled through my tears.

For the first time in weeks…

I could answer honestly.

“I’m okay, Mum.”

But as Daniel and I walked back toward campus, neither of us noticed the elderly woman sitting on a bench nearby.

She had watched us from a distance.

When we passed, she smiled kindly and said,

“Young people…”

We both stopped.

She looked at us and added,

“The hardest battles are not the ones everyone sees. They’re the ones you win when nobody is watching.”

Those words stayed with us long after we left.

Because we both knew…

The real test of our relationship was only just beginning.

Do you think real love is shown more by passion, or by the boundaries two people choose to keep?

To be continued…
