The Man at the Door

5 min read Jul 14, 2026 Marriage & Relationship Drama

The old man stood quietly at the entrance, gripping his walking stick with both hands.

His eyes remained fixed on Mama Bose.

She looked as though she had seen a ghost.

“You…” she whispered.

“I never thought I’d find you again.”

Damilola looked from one of them to the other.

“Mummy… do you know him?”

Neither answered.

The silence became uncomfortable.

Finally, the old man cleared his throat.

“My name is Chief Adebisi Akinola.”

The name meant nothing to Damilola.

But it hit Mama Bose like a thunderbolt.

“You have no right to come here.”

“I know.”

“Leave.”

“I can’t.”

Her voice rose.

“I said leave!”

Neighbours had already begun peeping through their curtains.

The commotion was attracting attention.

Chief Adebisi looked at Damilola.

“I’m sorry for coming unannounced.”

“But what I have to say cannot wait any longer.”

Twenty-eight years earlier…

Mama Bose was not the strong woman everyone knew today.

She was twenty-eight.

Pregnant.

Scared.

And newly widowed.

People spoke about her as if she couldn’t hear.

“She’s still young.”

“She should remarry.”

“A woman can’t survive alone.”

Some relatives even brought men to “see” her.

She rejected every one of them.

Her son was enough.

Or so everyone believed.

Back in the present…

“What do you want?” Mama Bose asked coldly.

Chief Adebisi took a deep breath.

“I came because someone has finally told me where you live.”

“Who?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

“I promised I wouldn’t mention the person’s name.”

Mama Bose laughed bitterly.

“So after all these years, you still keep promises.”

The old man lowered his eyes.

“I failed many people.”

“I know.”

“And I’ve regretted it every single day.”

Damilola interrupted.

“Excuse me… can someone please explain what’s happening?”

Neither of them answered him.

It was as though he wasn’t even in the room.

Across Lagos, Fiyin was helping her mother prepare breakfast when her phone vibrated.

It was Kunle.

She hesitated before answering.

“Hello.”

“Fiyin… I’m sorry to disturb you.”

“It’s okay.”

“I think you should know something.”

“What?”

“Damilola looks terrible.”

She stayed silent.

“I’ve never seen him like this.”

Another pause.

“He barely slept.”

Fiyin closed her eyes.

Part of her wanted to stop caring.

Another part couldn’t.

“Is he okay?”

“He keeps blaming himself.”

Tears formed in her eyes.

“I never wanted him to suffer.”

“I know.”

“You know what hurts the most?”

“What?”

“He still doesn’t understand why you left.”

Those words hit harder than she expected.

Because they were true.

Damilola thought she left because of one argument.

He didn’t realize she had been leaving, little by little, for almost three years.

Back at the house…

Chief Adebisi slowly reached into the leather bag hanging from his shoulder.

Mama Bose immediately stepped forward.

“No!”

Her voice shook.

“You will not do this.”

“I have to.”

“You promised.”

“I broke that promise the day I kept quiet.”

He pulled out a small file.

Inside were old photographs.

Birth certificates.

Hospital documents.

And another sealed envelope.

He looked directly at Damilola.

“Your father asked me to give these to you.”

Damilola frowned.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“But… he died when I was nine.”

“I know.”

“He trusted me.”

“With what?”

Chief Adebisi swallowed hard.

“With the truth.”

Mama Bose suddenly snatched the file from his hands.

“This conversation is over.”

She clutched it tightly.

“No one is opening this.”

Damilola stared at her.

“Mummy…”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because some truths are too dangerous.”

“For who?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead…

She looked at the front gate.

As though calculating whether she could still throw the old man out before anyone else heard.

That afternoon, Damilola couldn’t concentrate at work.

Numbers blurred on his computer screen.

Emails piled up unanswered.

His manager noticed immediately.

“You don’t look yourself.”

“I’m just tired.”

“If you need to take a few days off, do it.”

He nodded.

But work wasn’t the problem.

His mind kept replaying one sentence.

Your father trusted me with the truth.

What truth?

About what?

About whom?

That evening, he drove back home earlier than usual.

As he parked outside the house, he noticed Mama Bose wasn’t in the sitting room.

Her bedroom door was slightly open.

He walked past quietly.

Then he heard crying.

Soft.

Painful.

He had heard that kind of crying only once before.

The night they buried his father.

He stood frozen outside the door.

“Mummy…”

She didn’t hear him.

Inside, she was speaking through tears.

“I tried to protect him…”

“I only wanted him to love me…”

“I couldn’t lose him too…”

Damilola’s heart tightened.

Lose him?

Lose who?

Before he could step inside, his phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?”

A calm elderly voice replied.

“It’s Chief Adebisi.”

“How did you get my number?”

“Your friend Kunle gave it to me.”

“What do you want?”

“I want to tell you the truth.”

“My mother doesn’t.”

“I know.”

“When can we meet?”

Damilola looked toward his mother’s bedroom.

Then back at the phone.

After a long silence, he answered.

“Tomorrow morning.”

Chief Adebisi exhaled slowly.

“Good.”

“Because after tomorrow…”

“Nothing in your life will ever be the same.”

To be continued…

Engagement Question: If you were Damilola, would you meet Chief Adebisi behind your mother’s back, or would you respect her wishes and leave the past alone?
