The Truth That Changed Nothing

5 min read Jul 14, 2026 Marriage & Relationship Drama

Damilola barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he heard the same words.

“Your father trusted me with the truth.”

By 7:30 the next morning, he was already sitting inside a small café in Yaba, nervously tapping his fingers on the table.

At exactly eight o’clock, Chief Adebisi walked in.

He looked older in daylight.

His shoulders were bent with age, but the guilt in his eyes seemed even heavier.

“I’m glad you came,” he said quietly.

“I almost didn’t.”

“I wouldn’t blame you.”

A waitress dropped two cups of coffee on the table before walking away.

Neither man touched theirs.

Damilola leaned forward.

“I don’t have all day.”

Chief Adebisi nodded.

“You deserve answers.”

“Then start talking.”

The old man took a deep breath.

“Your father was my closest friend.”

“I know.”

“No…”

He shook his head.

“You don’t.”

“We built our businesses together.”

“We attended university together.”

“I was the best man at his wedding.”

Damilola listened silently.

“So why have I never heard your name before?”

“Because after your father died…”

“I disappeared.”

“Why?”

Chief Adebisi lowered his eyes.

“Because I was ashamed.”

He reached into his leather bag and carefully placed an old photograph on the table.

It showed two young men laughing beside a Peugeot 504.

One was Damilola’s father.

The other was Chief Adebisi.

“They really were close,” Damilola whispered.

“They were brothers.”

Another photograph followed.

His parents on their wedding day.

Then another.

His mother carrying baby Damilola.

He had never seen any of them before.

“Where did you get these?”

“Your father asked me to keep copies.”

“Why?”

“In case anything happened.”

Damilola frowned.

“Did he know he was going to die?”

The old man sighed.

“No.”

“But he knew he had enemies.”

Across town, Fiyin was back at work for the first time since leaving home.

Her colleagues welcomed her with smiles, unaware of the storm inside her.

“You look tired,” her friend Ada said.

“I didn’t sleep well.”

“Everything okay?”

Fiyin forced a smile.

“Marriage.”

Ada laughed.

“Say no more.”

But later, while they were alone in the office kitchen, Ada became serious.

“You know…”

“What?”

“I left my first marriage because I kept waiting for my husband to become someone he wasn’t.”

Fiyin looked at her.

“I stayed five years hoping tomorrow would be different.”

“Was it?”

Ada shook her head.

“No.”

“What changed?”

“I did.”

Those words stayed with Fiyin long after the conversation ended.

Back at the café, Damilola folded his arms.

“So what exactly is this truth?”

Chief Adebisi stared at him for several seconds.

Then he asked quietly,

“Do you love your mother?”

Damilola frowned.

“What kind of question is that?”

“Answer me.”

“Of course I do.”

“Would you do anything for her?”

“Yes.”

“Even if she was wrong?”

Damilola didn’t answer immediately.

The silence was enough.

Chief Adebisi nodded sadly.

“I thought so.”

He slowly pushed the final envelope across the table.

“Your father wrote this three months before he died.”

Damilola reached for it.

His hands trembled.

Before he could break the seal…

His phone rang.

Mummy Calling.

He stared at the screen.

Again.

Again.

Again.

She called four times in less than a minute.

Chief Adebisi spoke softly.

“Answer it.”

Damilola picked up.

“Mummy?”

Her breathing was uneven.

“Dami…”

“What happened?”

“Come home.”

“Why?”

“Please.”

“Mummy…”

“I need you.”

The call ended.

Damilola immediately stood.

“I have to go.”

Chief Adebisi didn’t stop him.

Instead, he quietly said,

“That’s exactly what your father feared.”

Damilola paused.

“What does that mean?”

The old man smiled sadly.

“You’ll understand someday.”

Damilola sped through the morning traffic, ignoring every red light he could safely cross.

His mind raced.

Was his mother sick?

Had something happened?

By the time he reached home, an ambulance was parked outside.

His heart nearly stopped.

He rushed inside.

“Mummy!”

Mama Bose was sitting on the sofa.

Perfectly fine.

Two neighbours stood beside her.

One of them smiled.

“Thank God you’ve come.”

“What happened?”

“We thought her blood pressure had gone up.”

Damilola knelt in front of his mother.

“Mummy, are you okay?”

She nodded.

“I’m better now.”

He held her hands.

“You scared me.”

She squeezed his fingers tightly.

“I just needed to see you.”

He looked confused.

“The ambulance…”

“The neighbours insisted.”

Everything seemed normal.

Too normal.

As the neighbours left, Damilola noticed something strange.

Mama Bose kept looking toward the brown envelope he had left on the dining table before going out.

“Where is it?” she asked.

“What?”

“The letter.”

He hesitated.

“It’s safe.”

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

Her face hardened.

“I said give it to me.”

“Mummy…”

“You promised you’d always trust me.”

“And I still do.”

“Then don’t read it.”

Damilola looked into his mother’s eyes.

For the first time in his life…

He wasn’t sure whether she was protecting him…

Or protecting herself.

To be continued…

Engagement Question: Do you think Mama Bose genuinely wants to protect Damilola, or is she hiding something that could destroy the image he has of her?
