The Necklace

Tosan sat upright on his bed.

Sleep vanished instantly.

His eyes remained fixed on the photograph.

The pendant was small, almost easy to miss.

A silver oval with a tiny engraving in the center.

Simple.

Elegant.

Unusual.

And he had definitely seen it before.

Just a few hours ago.

Around Amire’s neck.

His heart began to pound.

No. There has to be another explanation.

Thousands of people wore necklaces.

Thousands of people owned family jewelry.

That didn’t mean anything.

Did it?

Yet the longer he stared at the photograph, the harder it became to dismiss.

At 1:17 a.m., he almost picked up his phone to call Amire.

Then stopped himself.

What exactly was he going to say?

“Good evening. Sorry to wake you. Is the necklace you’re wearing connected to the woman my father was supposed to marry thirty years ago?”

He dropped the phone onto the bed.

This mystery was beginning to affect his common sense.

The next morning, he arrived at work carrying more questions than answers.

Unfortunately, questions were not helping him finish his reports.

“Tosan.”

He looked up.

Dami was standing beside his desk.

“What?”

“You’ve read the same email five times.”

“No, I haven’t.”

“You have.”

“I was reviewing details.”

“You were staring at the screen like somebody trying to communicate with ancestors.”

Tosan laughed despite himself.

Dami sat on the edge of the desk.

“What’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

“Liar.”

He sighed.

There was no point denying it.

Something was bothering him.

The problem was that he didn’t know how to explain it without sounding completely insane.

Luckily, his phone vibrated.

A message from Amire.

Lunch today?

His mood immediately improved.

Dami noticed.

“Ah.”

“What?”

“There she is.”

“Who?”

“The reason you’re useless this week.”

Tosan shook his head.

But he couldn’t stop smiling.

They met later at a quiet restaurant in Lekki.

The moment Amire arrived, his attention went straight to her neck.

The pendant.

She was wearing it.

His stomach tightened.

The same oval shape.

The same design.

The same silver chain.

Amire sat down.

“You look nervous.”

“What?”

“You do.”

“I’m not nervous.”

“You are.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“Why are you looking at my necklace?”

Tosan nearly choked on his drink.

Amire burst into laughter.

“Oh my God.”

“I wasn’t staring.”

“You definitely were.”

This was becoming a habit.

Tosan rubbed his forehead.

“Can I ask you something?”

Her smile softened.

“Sure.”

“That necklace.”

She touched it instinctively.

“What about it?”

“Where did you get it?”

The question seemed harmless.

Yet something changed in her expression.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

More like surprise.

“My grandmother gave it to my mother.”

Tosan felt his pulse quicken.

“And then?”

“My mother gave it to me.”

The answer hit harder than it should have.

Family inheritance.

Family history.

Family connection.

His mind immediately returned to the photograph.

Amire noticed the seriousness on his face.

“What is this about?”

Tosan hesitated.

Then opened the photograph on his phone.

He turned the screen toward her.

Amire looked down.

At first, she seemed confused.

Then her eyes widened.

The color drained from her face.

Slowly, she reached for the phone.

“No.”

Tosan’s chest tightened.

“What?”

“No way.”

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

She zoomed in on the image.

Directly onto the pendant.

The same pendant.

The same necklace.

The same design.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

The noise of the restaurant faded away.

Neither noticed the waiter approaching their table.

Neither noticed the people around them.

Amire finally looked up.

Her hands were trembling.

“That’s impossible.”

Tosan swallowed.

“Do you know her?”

Amire stared at the woman in the photograph.

Then she said the last thing he expected.

“Yes.”

His breath caught.

Because there was no uncertainty in her voice.

No hesitation.

No guessing.

She knew exactly who the woman was.

And whatever connection existed between that woman and his family…

Amire had known about her all along.

To be continued…
