The Woman in the Photograph

4 min read Jun 23, 2026 Romance

For a moment, Tosan forgot where he was.

The sounds of the café faded into the background.

His mother’s words echoed inside his head.

She was supposed to become part of this family.

“What does that mean?” he asked.

His voice came out lower than he intended.

On the other end of the line, his mother sighed.

“Tosan, this is not something I should be discussing.”

“Mummy.”

“I mean it.”

“Mummy.”

The familiar warning in his voice made her fall silent.

When she finally spoke again, her tone was softer.

“There are things your father doesn’t like talking about.”

“Clearly.”

“Tosan…”

“No, because this doesn’t make sense.”

He stood from his chair and walked toward the café entrance.

“I ask who she is, everybody becomes uncomfortable. Dad wants the photograph deleted. Now you’re telling me she was supposed to become part of this family.”

His mother didn’t answer immediately.

That worried him more than any answer could.

Finally, she spoke.

“Before your father married me, there was someone else.”

Tosan froze.

A passing waiter nearly bumped into him.

He didn’t notice.

“What?”

“Years ago.”

His mother’s voice carried no bitterness.

Only exhaustion.

“Before we met, there was a woman he intended to marry.”

Tosan looked through the glass wall of the café.

Cars moved through the evening traffic.

People walked past carrying shopping bags.

The world continued normally.

Yet suddenly nothing felt normal.

“And that woman is the one in the photograph?”

“Yes.”

His grip tightened around the phone.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“Mummy.”

“I don’t.”

For once, he believed her.

“What I know is that one day she disappeared from his life.”

“Disappeared?”

“That’s all I know.”

The answer only created more questions.

“Why would he hide something like that?”

His mother laughed softly.

“Your father hides things even when they don’t matter.”

She wasn’t wrong.

The older man had spent most of his life locking pieces of himself away.

The conversation ended a few minutes later.

When Tosan returned to the table, Amire immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?”

He sat down slowly.

“My father knew the woman in that photograph.”

“The one you showed me?”

He nodded.

“The one who looks a little like me?”

The words caught him off guard.

He stared at her.

“You noticed?”

Amire smiled weakly.

“Tosan, I have eyes.”

For a second, neither spoke.

Then she looked down at her cup.

“To be honest, that’s why I kept looking at the picture.”

A strange feeling settled in his stomach.

“Do you think the resemblance is real?”

Amire shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

The answer should have ended there.

Instead she added:

“My mother used to tell me something strange when I was growing up.”

Tosan frowned.

“What?”

Amire hesitated.

As if debating whether she should continue.

Then she laughed nervously.

“It’s probably nothing.”

“What did she say?”

“That I have my grandmother’s eyes.”

The words landed heavily between them.

Because for the first time since this mystery began, another possibility entered Tosan’s mind.

Not a comfortable possibility.

Not a logical one.

But a possibility.

What if the resemblance wasn’t random?

What if there was an actual connection?

The thought was ridiculous.

Yet it refused to leave.

That night, sleep avoided him completely.

Around 1 a.m., he got out of bed and opened the photograph again.

The woman smiled back at him from the screen.

Young.

Hopeful.

Unaware that decades later someone would be searching for answers about her.

He zoomed in further.

Then froze.

There was something he hadn’t noticed before.

A necklace.

Small.

Simple.

A pendant hanging from a thin chain.

His heartbeat quickened.

Because earlier that evening, he had seen the exact same pendant around Amire’s neck.
