The Package

I didn’t sleep.

Not even for one second.

How could I?

Every small sound outside felt like someone was watching.

Every passing car made me sit up.

Every vibration from my phone made my heart jump.

By 6am, I gave up trying.

I just sat on my bed, staring at the wall like person wey dey calculate life from beginning.

“What have I entered?”

That question no gree leave my head.

By 8:30am, I was already awake, dressed, and pacing my room.

Waiting.

Because somehow…

I knew they wouldn’t be late.

9am sharp.

That’s what they said.

And something about that voice told me one thing:

These people don’t joke with time.

8:57am.

My heart was already beating fast.

8:59am.

I stood still.

Listening.

Then—

KNOCK.

KNOCK.

KNOCK.

Three slow knocks.

My entire body froze.

For a few seconds, I didn’t move.

The knock came again.

This time louder.

“KNOCK. KNOCK.”

“Omo…”

I swallowed hard and walked slowly toward the door.

Each step felt heavy.

Like my legs didn’t want to cooperate.

I got to the door and paused.

“Who is it?” I asked.

Silence.

Then a voice:

“Delivery.”

Normal voice.

Too normal.

That was what made it even scarier.

I unlocked the door slowly and opened it just a little.

A bike man stood outside.

Helmet on.

Face not clear.

Holding a small brown package.

“Package for you,” he said.

I didn’t move.

Just stared at him.

“From who?” I asked.

He shrugged.

“No idea. I was just told to deliver.”

Something about the way he said it…

He wasn’t lying.

Or maybe he didn’t even know anything.

I opened the door fully and stepped out.

Collected the package.

Light.

Too light.

Before I could ask anything else—

He had already turned his bike.

And left.

Just like that.

No questions.

No delay.

No trace.

I stood there for a few seconds, holding the package.

Then slowly went back inside and locked the door.

My hands were already shaking.

“Omo… open it.”

But another voice in my head said:

“What if you don’t like what’s inside?”

I sat on the bed.

Staring at it.

Brown paper.

Neatly sealed.

No name.

No address.

Nothing.

Just me… and whatever was inside.

I took a deep breath.

And opened it.

Inside…

Was a phone.

A small black phone.

Not a smartphone.

Just one of those old button phones.

Clean.

New.

And beside it…

A folded piece of paper.

My heart was beating fast now.

I picked the paper first.

Opened it.

One line.

Just one.

“Use only this phone. Wait.”

I frowned.

“Wait for what?”

As if answering me—

The small phone vibrated.

I froze.

Stared at it.

It vibrated again.

Incoming call.

No number.

No name.

Just ringing.

My chest tightened.

“Omo…”

I picked it slowly.

Placed it on my ear.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then—

“Good.”

That same voice.

But this time…

Closer.

Clearer.

Like he was right beside me.

“Now we can start.”

My throat went dry.

“Start what?”

A short pause.

Then—

“Your first task.”

My heart skipped.

Task??

“What task?”

Silence.

Then he said something that made my entire body go cold:

“You’re going to deliver something for us.”

I stood up immediately.

“No. No, I can’t—”

“You already did.”

I froze.

Confused.

“What do you mean?”

A soft chuckle.

“The moment you spent that money…”

Pause.

“…you accepted the job.”

My chest tightened.

“No, I didn’t agree to anything!”

His tone changed slightly.

Still calm.

But heavier.

“You don’t understand yet.”

Silence.

Then—

“This is not a request.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Check the package again.”

Call ended.

My heart was racing now.

Fast.

Too fast.

I looked at the box again.

Carefully.

This time…

I searched deeper.

And that was when I saw it.

A small hidden compartment inside the box.

My breath caught.

I opened it slowly.

Inside…

Was a USB drive.

And another note.

This one longer.

I unfolded it.

Read it.

And instantly…

Everything inside me dropped.

“Take this to the address below.
No delays. No questions.
You are being watched.”

Below it…

Was an address.

Somewhere in Lagos.

A place I knew very well.

Because nothing good ever happens there.

I sat down slowly.

My head spinning.

My chest tight.

Because now…

It was clear.

Very clear.

This wasn’t free money.

This wasn’t luck.

This was something else.

Something dangerous.

And somehow…

I was already too deep inside it.

To be continued…

You're almost done!
